about

The video game “Scenario” was originally conceived as an instructional tool for teachers. Developed by the Department of Education in the mid '90s, it was meant to aid and guide students who had trouble navigating social interactions. A complementary goal of the game was to explain and map out, in great detail, how to accomplish simple, everyday tasks, such as going to the grocery store and making yourself breakfast. As former Secretary of Education Madeleine Kunin put it, “When it comes to social interaction, to teaching social scripts, we are failing many of our students. The children of today are learning math, history, and english, but they aren’t learning how to be people in a society. The small but important cues that make up social life are falling by the wayside. 'Scenario' will be a timely, relevant panacea to the struggles of the social experience." The “Scenario” project was abandoned shortly after its launch, in part because of extreme scrutiny placed on the D.O.E. by the Republican party during the 1996 election cycle.
The project was later revisited in 2001 under the No Child Left Behind Act, with renowned designer Søren Tveit commissioned to complete the game. Ultimately, the project was defunded again, as Tveit had taken extreme liberties with the initial concept of the game, and created something that could not be reasonably used as a teaching tool. Instead, Tveit created a fractured, narrative-driven text-based RPG about a girl struggling to get through her day. The game was never finished, but the soundtrack and some elements of the story were recovered after years spent in storage.
